How can we best define confidence?
The best description that I recently came across sums up having confidence as not being afraid to take action. When we want to do something challenging or attempt something new, we tend to feel nervous and apprehensive. This is normal and is a natural human reaction. But the key to being confident is being able to overcome our doubts and insecurities. It’s all about not letting our negative feelings win and squash our ambitions before we’ve had a chance to ignite our dream.
The confident person acknowledges how they are feeling. They recognise the nervousness they are feeling but they still make the vital decision to take action. And the important thing to realise is that this very process of taking action becomes a virtuous circle. We attempt something new and the next time we have to do it, or something similar, we feel so much better about trying it again. The more we take action, the greater our confidence grows.
Having confidence as a key enabler to us being able to live the life we want. It is the quality of being able to take action on our thoughts and ideas. So I believe that it’s very important that we all invest time in learning how to build our confidence – and here are some tips that I have found to be very useful in helping me overcome my own doubts and insecurities.
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right
Building confidence has to do with what we tell ourselves. So my first tip for building confidence is to start the practice of telling yourself things that uplift you. As a start, begin by telling yourself “I have everything I need” – even if you don’t feel like you do. To help you do this, just remember that all of us really do have everything we need to take the next step in our lives.
We have the gift of another day, we have time that another day gives us, we have ideas and the Universe has the answers we are seeking.
And practice telling yourself, and make yourself think today, other thoughts and ideas that are empowering. And then start to notice how your confidence levels start to increase. Your thoughts can take you right to the dream in your heart – but not if you don’t think them in the first place!
This takes us to my second tip – creating your “I AM” statement!
If the majority of our thoughts are negative – if we constantly think that we are unable do things – we can’t expect to feel very confident. We become what we are telling ourselves in our head!
So how can we improve, increase, deepen and expand our confidence?
Fortunately, it’s not a process of us having to wait for more confidence to magically come to us. We are able to start the process of developing our confidence ourselves. We have the power of choice and we get to choose how much confidence we will develop for ourselves. How? By creating our own Confidence Booster. And one of the simplest ways we can create an effective Confidence Booster is by writing our own “I AM” statement.
When I was dreaming about becoming a Coach, I created my own “I AM” statement. I wrote, “I am a Coach” along with a short description of how I would feel being a successful coach on a piece of paper. I then placed this piece of paper in my pocket. And every day I would reach into my pocket to touch the piece of paper. And in touching my note, and reading it out to myself each day, I was reminding myself of my dream. That I was a Coach even if the world at that very moment didn’t know it.
Making a decision to be committed is my third tip to help you build your confidence.
If you truly want to develop and increase your confidence, it is important that you commit to making your own “I AM” statement. And also commit to getting into the habit of reading it to yourself several times a day. When you start to consciously use the power of your “I AM” statement, your confidence will grow. But you have to be consistent and develop the habit of referring to and reading your statement every day.
And if you do decide to make the commitment, what you will find is truly remarkable. The “I AM” within you will start to help you to develop the confidence you need to be exactly what you would love yourself to be. This process works when you commit to your success by WORKING IT! And as you work at it every day, you will begin to notice that the daily reference to your “I AM” statement becomes an unconscious habit.
Your ultimate aim is to use your “I AM” statement to help you reprogram your brain to accept better and more positive thoughts and ideas. And to turn these more positive thoughts and ideas into beliefs. You are a spiritual being with unlimited power and creativeness and your “I AM” statement is just reaffirming the truth of this fact. As your beliefs become more positive, so too will your confidence.
And you don’t have to limit yourself to a single copy of your “I AM” statement in your pocket. You can make as many copies as you like. You can jot them down on sticky “post-it” notes and place them around your house in places where you can constantly refer to them. For example, stick them on your refrigerator, at your desk or on your mirror in your bedroom.
Remember that you have the capability to do anything you set your mind to – so make the commitment to complete your “I AM” statement today.
What fantastic “I AM” statements are you going to write for yourself?
